Anju with Vibin and Ryan

Anju Mathew:

When we bought our new apartment, we decided to ensure that we will design
our home, ourselves.I always believe that there is a designer in every one of us.

Let me share mine and Vibin’s thought  process  below:

We both had very similar thoughts on how our apartment should be and that has really helped us in setting up an interior like the one we have now. Even before we bought our apartment, we used to collect stuff for interior designing, from different places and always had a clear picture of where it should be.

Our basic thought was to have enough light in every room and hence we decided to have a shade of white in all rooms.

Curtain furnishings were found to be expensive in Bangalore. So a majority of curtain furnishings have been done from a famous shop (called Classic furnishings) in Trichur, near St.Mary’s college.

A combination of cream and white color was given in the master bedroom curtains and for the kids room we chose a Maroon and white color combination. The reason why we ended up in a Maroon and white for the kids room is because we wanted a generic color (we were just expecting our baby at that time and were not sure if it’s going to be a boy or girl). So we ruled out pink and blue from the colors of the wardrobe and while selecting the laminations for the woodwork, maroon found to be attractive and we had already seen a combination of maroon and cream in one of the websites, while doing the research.

We have also used blinds as well in one small window in our master bedroom and for all the doors we have put thread curtains ( a wide selection was present in ‘Classic furnishings’ for blinds, rugs, carpets, thread curtains etc).

Almost all the wall hangings which we have used for interior designing are from US, most of those are purchased from Walmart and few have been shopped online. I had a liking towards wrought iron wall hangings, so have a few of those in my collection.

For doing the wardrobe woodwork,  we did a lot of research in the internet for the designs and we both have personally spend a lot of time in various shops to pick the colors for the wardrobes, selecting the electrical stuff, the bathroom fittings. We got one carpenter who did a great job on the wardrobe in a very economic way. I had given a suggestion of doing something different in Ryan’s room and so I had asked the carpenter do some simple designs in the wardrobe in kid’s room (making complex designs in lamination is tough, so I had to browse in the internet for few simple designs and ended up in wave shaped design which he could work out).
For the other bed rooms and foyer, Vibin suggested the color of rosewood (which is one of the favorite wood in Kerala furniture’s). So we decided lamination color which resembled the rose wood and a cream color with brown patches in between.
Furniture selection has been from Bangalore itself from a place called RT Nagar (near to KR Puram) which is famous as a furniture depot. You will find some 40 furniture shops on both sides of the road, as you enter that area.
Vibin has spent a lot of his weekends on getting the things for the carpenter, and hoping into different shops before we finalized each item. What we advise is, not to go after branded shops or malls for furniture or electrical item’s purchase ( For that we have to plan a lot in advance and need to avoid the last minute rush in decision making and purchase). We found that we could get furniture of the same quality in half the price, from RT Nagar compared to the ones sold in big malls or shops. Also, we could do a lot of negotiations in the price as there was a huge competition between the different shops.

Altogether we feel that, if we had given our apartment to some interior designing people, we should have ended up spending the double of what we have spent right now. I am very happy that whatever effort we have spent has really paid off.
